"Funny how things change," you said, but you didn't mean funny at all.

You're bruised and bleeding, my Kate. You've been dealt a terrible blow.

I understand.

We all understand.

The winds of change are turning your world upside down, and I'm sure you feel helpless, but remember this ... All you have to do right now, dear Kate, is hang on tight until this storm that is raging inside your heart and mind ends.

And it will end, Kate. I promise It will end.

Take deep breaths, hold your head high and think about the future.

Wonderful adventures lie waiting up ahead ...

You'll return to college in time, and you'll earn degrees that will enable you to do the kind of work you are meant to do. You're going to leave your mark upon this world, Kate. You'll be remembered long after your life on earth is over.

You'll throw yourself whole-heartedly into your writing before long. In time, you'll publish the kinds of books that hold people spellbound from beginning to end. You'll be famous some day. I'm sure of it.

And, Kate, you'll love again ... and be loved. There are many fine trustworthy people out there who will appreciate how wonderful and unique you are ... people who will cherish your love and never ever betray you.

This time around you'll be older and wiser and you'll choose with your head as well as with your heart. You'll be careful to share your life only with someone in your own class and on your own intellectual level ... someone who is emotionally stable and secure ... someone who will encourage you to attain great success and be all that you were born to be ... someone who won't feel threatened by your exceptionally bright mind.

Keep your eyes turned firmly toward the future. Don't look back, Kaitlin. There's nothing back there worth thinking about.

Feel those invisible arms holding you tight? They're mind ...
